Dear Glacier’s Edge Council Scouting Family,
The Glacier’s Edge Council continues to monitor the rapidly evolving situation regarding COVID-19, commonly known as the coronavirus. As always, the safety of our Scouts, volunteers and council employees is our top priority. We are following the guidance of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local governmental authorities.
Scouting will do its part to minimize the spread of the coronavirus. Starting Monday, March 16, all district and council activities and events will be conducted virtually or will be postponed or cancelled until at least April 17. Additionally, our camp properties will be closed during this time. We appreciate your understanding of any necessary adjustments in the interest of health and safety.
Service Centers & Scout Shops Closing
Starting tomorrow, Thursday, March 19, the Madison Scout Shop and Janesville Scout Shop will be closed to the public until at least April 17, 2020 to help mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus. Please consider shopping online at scoutstuff.org while our local Scout Shops are closed.
Status of Council Events
All council events and meetings will be conducted virtually, postponed or canceled until at least April 17. Here is information on several of the upcoming events.
Full refunds will be provided for canceled events, activities and camp reservations. For postponed events, your payment will be honored for the new date or you can request a refund.
District Meetings & Activities
April Roundtable Meetings – Virtual Meetings
March & April Committee & Commissioner Meetings – Virtual Meetings
Instructions on how to attend the virtual meetings will be sent out in advance. Please check our council website, social media, and your district newsletters for more information
Temporary Camp Closures
Starting on Monday, March 16, Ed Bryant Scout Reservation and Camp Indian Trails will be closed for Scouting activities and camping. If conditions allow, both camps will reopen on April 17. Cabin reservations will be refunded or can be rolled over for future use.
We are moving forward with summer camp plans for Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA programs. All registration dates are continuing as previously planned. Council refund policies are in effect and extenuating circumstances will be considered.
We are strongly recommending that units do not hold meetings, activities or outings during the statewide school closure. Individual Scouting units and chartering organizations should determine whether their regular meetings and activities will continue with safety as the number one priority. Please utilize guidance provided by your local health authorities, school districts and chartering organizations. We encourage unit leaders to consider ways to continue your Scouting programs via technology and virtual meetings.
Look for program ideas that Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA participants can do during this time period. There are advancement areas that can be worked on from home.
We have received numerous inquiries as to possible service efforts that Scouts can participate in. We will update our Scouting family as appropriate opportunities present themselves. One area that our Scouting family can do is to check on any neighbors that may have difficulty with shopping and basic services. Common sense should define these opportunities.
One of the best forms of defense against the virus is prevention. A Scout is Clean, and we all have a role to play in staying healthy. Please familiarize yourself with the CDC guidelines on how to limit the spread of coronavirus. If you have a fever, cough or other symptoms associated with COVID-19, or if you believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19, you should not attend any Scouting events.
Above all, the Glacier’s Edge Council is dedicated to protecting our Scouts, volunteers and staff by providing a safe Scouting environment. We will continue to update you on new developments.
Yours in Scouting,
Alex Tyms, Jr.
